Oral Medication

Finasteride inhibits 5-alpha reductase, which blocks DHT production in hair follicles. DHT will shrink hair follicles. The dosage is 1 mg PO once daily. Daily use for >= 3 months is necessary before the reduction in hair loss. Continued use is essential to sustain benefit. Withdrawal of treatment leads to reversal of effect within 12 months. Finasteride is not FDA-approved for use in females of childbearing potential. It is contraindicated during pregnancy and during breast-feeding. $30/month

Topical minoxidil is likely effective in producing moderate hair growth in approximately 30% of men and 60% of women with common hereditary hair loss.
